Fly-fishing:
With over 1000km of rivers and streams available, Maclear is the Mecca for wild troutfishing in South Africa. The now classic book "The Rapture of the River" by Sydney Hey first brought this region under the attention the public. Fishing ranges from fast flowing little streams, to slow deep rivers with huge pools. As a bonus many dams have been built, providing fly fisherman with the option of stillwater fishing.
The custodian of most of these waters is the Maclear Fly fishing Club. Contact Colin Moolman (082 578 2048) or Noel Wagenaar (045-9321038). Day permits available at Maclear Agencies (Next to ABSA Bank), or Maclear Nissan at R50-00 per day. The club hosts a yearly River Festival in May.
